George Ilsley
We’ve known George for many years though he and Brenda were in the Folk Group long before us. His memory was phenomenal. We first met him as a caller. He would stand among the dancers when he was calling, commenting on the moves and often where the dance came from. He rarely used a prompt card. He knew what music he wanted, was polite to the band and very patient with the dancers especially those who were first time campers. As callers George gave us plenty of advice in a very professional way encouraging advice, emphasising the phrasing and timing of calling and music. This we found very useful. We both believe that his calming way of teaching us the dance moves rubbed off on us.
As we got to know him other parts of his life were revealed. He and Brenda cycled miles and when out with him on a car ride he would recount various routes and memorable places they had visited. He could also recite monologues as we found out a Shipston upon Stour. George was a good raconteur and we in Midland will miss him.
