Astley Meet Report - November 25
Astley Meet, November 2025
Just back from a fabulous weekend at Astley! A huge thank you to Mark and TC for organising such a full and enjoyable programme. Astley itself is a small, peaceful village set in beautifully rural countryside, and the modern hall made a wonderfully cosy base for us all—from the welcoming cuppa on arrival right through to our final coffee on Sunday morning.
Friday evening began with a bring-your-own supper, followed by a well-run programme of dancing and floor spots.
Saturday opened, naturally, with another cuppa before we split into a great variety of activities. There were inclusive music sessions featuring all sorts of instruments, providing a lovely backdrop for those making Iris folded cards under TC’s expert guidance. We also had a Quordle jigsaw, a ukulele get-together and a calling workshop to round off the afternoon.
We all came together later for a fantastic, shared tea—the tables were groaning under the sheer variety of delicious dishes. Not a single plate was alike, which amazed me given there were 19 units onsite! Full to the brim, we headed into yet another action-packed evening.
Special mention goes to Mark for being a brilliant MC and for his Morris dance demonstration; to band leaders Tim and Ann for directing such a talented group of players; and to our excellent callers—Gay, Rosemary, both Johns, Mark, and Glen (who is well on his way in his calling journey). As spectators, we loved watching the spirited attempts at every dance—some more successful than others perhaps, but every one performed with heart and enthusiasm.
Floor spots showcased an impressive range of talent, from solo and duo singing to instrumental pieces. Ivan the Younger made his debut as a highly promising guitarist and singer. Other wonderful contributions came from Chris and Jenny, John C, Jeff, both Bobs, Noreen, Beth, Mark, Gill, Keith, Tim and Ann, Julie, Julia, Dave, Tom and Claire. It’s amazing how many instruments, genres and voices can be found within one small group.
Thank you, Midlands, for welcoming us so warmly. We will definitely be back!
